IP rating overview:
The first digit indicates the degree of protection against dangerous contact and against the ingress of foreign objects:
- IP 0x unprotected
- IP 1x protection against ingress of solid objects larger than 50mm
- IP 2x protection against ingress of solid objects larger than 12.5mm
- IP 3x protection against ingress of solid objects larger than 2.5mm
- IP 4x protection against ingress of solid objects larger than 1mm
- IP 5x dust protection
- IP 6x dustproof (dust must not interfere with the operation of electrical equipment
The second digit indicates the degree of protection against water ingress:
- IP x0 without protection
- IPx1 protection against vertically falling water drops
- IPx2 protection against water droplets falling at an angle of up to 15° from the vertical
- IP x3 protection against rain falling at an angle of up to 60° from the vertical
- IP x4 protection against splashing water from any direction
- IP x5 protection against jets of water from any direction
- IP x6 protection against intense jets of water and waves
- IP x7 protection against temporary immersion in water (limited by pressure and time)
- IP x8 protection against permanent immersion in water (any ingress of water must not disrupt the operation of the electrical equipment)
